Five Questions for Jason Witt

Q:What has been your most challenging project at EMS?
A:The implementation of our paperless manufacturing execution system. This not only involved a large technical effort, but almost a marketing like campaign to sell the concept of converting from stacks of paper that moved with the hardware to purely electronic data.
Q:What is the most significant trend you have seen in your field?
A:Lean, lean, lean. A lot of companies, especially in this industry, have stuck to a “that doesn’t apply to what we do” mindset. Momentum to change this has been building greatly over the last few years. Lean manufacturing, DFM, Six Sigma, etc. have all been applied to defense and low volume production and development with great success.
Q:What is a typical day like for you?
A:My time is typically divided between production support, design support and continuous improvement efforts. There is no “typical” day, which is both good and challenging. The days are completely different depending on the life cycle of the products and the improvements we are attempting at that time.
Q:What do you like most about your job?
A:In a word: Change. It’s great fun to develop a concept, convince a group of people (including skeptics) that this is the right path forward, implement it, improve it and watch it grow and succeed.
Q:If you weren’t working at EMS, what would you be doing?
A:Probably working for another company in the aerospace industry. Or if I was financially independent, relaxing on the beach with my wife and son.
