EMS Defense & Space (D&S) Division is a leading supplier of antenna systems and beam management for a broad range of military and commercial applications, including mobile network-centric operations, radar for battlefield visibility and commercial aero connectivity. Defense & Space hardware products and systems enable secure and vital RF links in the air, in space, at sea and on the ground. Customers include the world’s best defense, space and aviation companies.

Solutions At-A-Glance

EMS microwave systems serve the battlespace in communications, surveillance, precision strike and electronic warfare. Its low-observable, compact, and high-performance RF systems work across all warfighter platforms.

EMS pioneered the use of ferrite technology in advanced RF microwave and millimeter wave subsystems and has developed leading edge antenna technologies for numerous advanced applications. The U.S. Department of Defense relies on EMS for highly reliable, rapidly developed, innovative solutions to meet radar, communications and electronic warfare challenges.

EMS has extensive experience with ferrite subsystems, airborne radar, antenna systems, and RF countermeasures. We develop cutting-edge electronics subsystems for applications from ECM to airborne ISR to high bandwidth mobile communications to missile seekers.

The division also provides antenna capabilities for next-generation commercial satellites for entertainment and Internet connectivity. Our core competencies include:

  • advanced antennas and antenna systems, including: slot arrays, active and passive phased arrays, switched horn systems, geodesic cone phased arrays and shaped reflectors, as well as various lens configurations (Constant K, Luneberg, etc.)
  • high-performance ferrite switches and phase shifters
  • ferrite beam-forming systems, switch networks and autotrack modulators
  • adaptive nulling techniques
  • satcom-on-the-move antenna subsystems
  • positioning systems

Customer Base

Major systems prime contractors, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon, rely on EMS to provide critical components for radar, secure communications and electronic-warfare systems. Besides these Tier 1 customers, EMS also provides solutions to BEA Systems, Harris and L3, among others. In addition, EMS is the industry leader in direct broadcast satellite antennas onboard commercial airlines. As of February 2009, EMS antenna systems are flying on more than 300 commercial aircraft, including JetBlue Airways and Frontier Airlines in the United States, Virgin Blue in Australia and WestJet in Canada. EMS is also supplying a new broadband antenna system for Panasonic Avionics Corporation.

Facilities

EMS recently expanded its defense facility and now has a 175,000 square-foot, ISO 9001 certified manufacturing area located in Norcross, Ga. The highly scalable and flexible facilities include clean room laboratories class 10,000 and 100,000; a world-class, fully integrated CAD/CAM design center; a Ferrite/Ceramics Research & Production Center; world-class machining and grinding operations; environmental test facilities; and advanced, specialized test equipment
